    You never know. I always look at the 78 cars that are for sale and I do see quite a few with all the USA emissions systems in tact. I bet many of those cars still have the switch and when they go in for service the technician can just jump the switch when tuning it.

    Start at the beginning and with what you already know:
    The car ran.
    The original pump was noisy.

    Replaced pump
    Car/pump ran briefly.

    Process:
    Pull line from tank to pump
    Is there fuel?
    Yes?
    No->Is there fuel in the tank.

    Is there power to pump with key on?
    Yes?
    Supply good?
    No? Jump seat switch or use external power source
    Output-No->Pump junk

    Simple, simple diagnostic process.

    Okay, update on the fuel pump is that the fuel pump goes on a back burner while I figure out what's causing an ominous rattling sound.
    Got back home from a business trip, gave myself a week to get over 16-hour jetlag before crawling under a car, started it up (on old fuel pump) and what was a faint rattle before I left has become an alarmingly loud rattle. see 'mysterious rattle'; I'll get back to the fuel pump when the engine doesn't sound like it's about to fall apart.
