    Default The stars aligned..

..and my '95 355 GTB is now safely in the hands of David at FoB for a major. The car has about 36K miles and Eileen and I got the car in '02 and put 7K of those miles on before we had kids. The motor has never had the valve guides replaced, so that is one of the major concerns at this point. Although the headers were rebuilt back in '04. The car was driven up until '09 when it was severely overdue for a major and has been garaged since then. I was good about keeping it on a battery tender and starting it monthly and letting it warm up. Thought The last time I went to start it the throttle stuck, I immediately shut it off and she's been sitting since. I never had the time to pull the engine covers (and a now droopy deck lid) to trace the cable and return, so that will be one of the first things to resolve followed by a leak down test. Eileen and I are very excited about having the car back on the road but our sons, Devin (10) and Aidan (8) are absolutely ECSTATIC. I do have to admit, I am truly frightened by the potential expenses with this project but am confident we are in good hands.

Oh man, it's going to be great to see that car back on the road!!!! I have my fingers crossed that David won't find anything too terrible in there, but she is a 355 after all, not the best reputation for low cost repairs!! But she's in the right hands. David will will have that thing better than new.

    Fastforward...
Engine removed, preliminary leakdown tests reveal excessive valve leakage
Heads removed, rebuilt with new valves, guides and modern valve stem seals
Cylinder liner bores inspected and leak checked to ensure piston ring integrity
Block deck surfaces and valley cleaned
    Heads reinstalled-initial preload torque done
    Angle torque remains...
And then the cams go in, belts installed and tensioned...then, on to the cam timing.

Expect to take the preliminary cam timing readings tomorrow and then get down to business dialing them in...
